Camping Gear
The huts on the trail do not have guaranteed availability. We should therefore be prepared with our own gear and know how to use it.
Shelter
All travellers will either need to bring a tent or a bivy. Choose based on how much weight you’re prepared to pack, and how much comfort you desire.
Tent
Tents provide room to sit up, change clothes, and store gear out of the rain. They also feature vestibules and bug mesh, making them far more comfortable during sustained storms or multi-day trips.
Bivy
A bivy (short for bivouac) is an ultralight, weatherproof, and breathable sleeping bag cover used by mountaineers and backpackers as a minimalist alternative to a tent. It protects your sleep system from rain, wind, and bugs while reducing overall gear weight and space.
Sleeping Bag + Sleeping Mat
Aim to bring a sleeping bag and mat with an R value that can deal with up to 5C temperatures overnight.
Sleeping mats are essential for ensuring you are insulated from temperature loss lying on the ground. A sleeping bag rated to 5C won’t work efficiently if you don’t have a mat to match.
Cooking
Butane or Alcohol Cook System
To cook dehyrdated meals, prepare water for tea/coffee, etc. The huts are stocked with burning alcohol for cooking. Butane canisters are also inexpensive - bring enough to last until we can resupply.
